On 4 December 2024, the Home Office announced crucial transitional measures to ensure a smoother shift to eVisas from 1 January 2025. These changes aim to address concerns about potential technical challenges and ensure seamless travel during this transition.
Key Updates for Traveler’s:
- Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and EU Settlement Scheme Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) expiring on 31 December 2024 will remain valid as evidence of permission to travel to the UK until 31 March 2025. This temporary measure aims to ease travel for migrants during the festive period.
- Migrants with indefinite leave to remain using ink stamps or vignettes in their passports can continue relying on these documents for proof of rights and travel. However, these individuals are encouraged to apply for a No Time Limit application to access an eVisa as soon as possible.
Important Steps for Hassle-Free Travel
To avoid complications during travel, we strongly recommend taking the following steps:
1. Create and Update Your eVisa Account
If you haven’t already, set up your UKVI account and link your current passport or travel document to your eVisa profile. Ensure all details are accurate and up-to-date, especially:
- Mobile phone number
- Email address
- Name
- Identity documents (passport, national ID)
- Home or postal address
Use the official UKVI account management page to create or manage your eVisa.
2. Report Errors in Your eVisa
If there’s an error in your eVisa, such as incorrect name, photo, or immigration status, report it immediately to UKVisas and Immigration (UKVI).
3. Travel with Your BRP or BRC
Although BRPs and BRCs expiring on 31 December 2024 are officially valid until 31 March 2025, always carry these documents during travel to avoid issues. If you face boarding challenges, airlines can contact the Home Office’s 24/7 support hub to verify your immigration status.
4. Generate a ‘View and Prove’ Share Code
Airlines and carriers may request a share code to confirm your immigration permission. Generate one through the UKVIportal, valid for 90 days from creation.
5. Carry Supporting Documentation
Have copies of your Home Office approval email, confirmation letter, and eVisa profile page with you while traveling for additional peace of mind.
Special Considerations for Pending Applications
Applications Within the UK
- If you submit an application for permission to stay, do not travel outside the Common Travel Area (CTA), including the UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, and Republic of Ireland, while waiting for a decision. Leaving the CTA will result in your application being treated as withdrawn, potentially affecting your immigration status.
Applications Outside the UK
- You can travel while awaiting a decision if you retain your passport (e.g., through the UK Immigration: ID Check app or the Keep My Passport While Applying service).
- Visitors with a valid Visitor Visa can enter the UK while their application is pending but must satisfy immigration authorities at the border regarding their visit’s purpose. Learn more about this on the Home Office website.
Citizenship Applications: Travel Flexibility
Applicants for British citizenship can travel outside the CTA while their applications are pending without restrictions.
